Meet Kylo. This adorable two year old rescue, Border Collie – Lab mutt is the little bundle of joy me and my girlfriend, Hayley, love to spoil.

Kylo brings an immense amount of joy in our lives –a sentiment that dog lovers are certainly no stranger to. Another sentiment dog lovers are no stranger to is the inevitable separation from our pets.

Both my girlfriend and I work full time jobs. Kylo spends most of the day alone in our apartment, idling time away by playing with our cat, Ms Beasley, and lounging in our couch among other activities. We certainly miss him throughout the course of the day and would like to check up on him every so often. 

That’s when Furbo comes in. I’d like to think of  ​it as my instant gateway to interact with Kylo anytime, anywhere.

It is essentially a camera that tosses treats and is equipped with a two-way audio. It is ridiculously easy to use. Plug it in, download the app and it is ready for use. Set up time takes as long as you reading the paragraph above.

My girlfriend and I share a Furbo account and we both have the app downloaded in our smart phones. Through the app, we are able to activate the camera to see what Kylo is up to. 

Introducing The Furbo Dog Camera To Kylo

​As you can imagine, Furbo was not an instant hit with Kylo. The first few times I used ​the dog camera to call to my pup, he lovingly made his way to the door…

He would patiently wait by the door despite my calls. That evening, I made it a point to really train Kylo to associate ​the dog camera with my voice and tasty treats.

The biggest threshold for him seemed to be the whirring noise ​from the treat dispenser. Kylo was initially scared of th​at noise.

After a combination of training sessions with us throwing treats beside the the device and using the remote feature through our smart phones, Kylo began to really trust Furbo and recognize our voice through the device.  Within a week, he would ​come running upon hearing our voice.  

My girlfriend and I both have hectic jobs so we can only ​check in twice a day at most. Unless he is napping, the familiar sound of his dog collar tags ringing would follow my call. Kylo loves his Furbo dog camera!

There is actually an option to record a short audio clip prior to tossing treats to your pup. We elected not to use this option and just default to Furbo’s beep prior to tossing treats. Why? Just not our style.  

He even learned to follow the command “sit” before receiving tasty treats from us! As you can see, that adorable look of curiosity with the head tilt was directed at Furbo’s crisp camera. 

​​Furbo’s camera lends itself well to darker conditions. Kylo was quick to follow the sound of our voices and ​come over… standing by for a treat like a good boy!

​​​Bark And Intruder Alert

​Furbo dog camera also has some passive features that sends you notifications when it detects movement from your dog, barking, or if it spots a person through its camera.

Now Kylo is not a barker so we grew suspicious with the frequency of barking alerts. As it turns out, Furbo is not that great in discriminating barking noises from other noises. A simple sneeze or a cough can be interpreted as barking. I’d be curious to know how ​it works with dogs that are consistent barkers.

At any rate, this notification is easily silenced with a simple swipe. Where it fails in identifying sounds, ​it makes up for ​with it’s camera ID technology. ​The dog camera effectively alerts you when it spots movement from a person or your dog.

Whenever your dog is getting active, Furbo sends you an alert so you can play with your furball. We have certainly used ​it to communicate with Kylo throughout the course of a day. Also, Furbo’s camera is consistently adept in identifying when a person is within sight. This incidental security benefit can come in handy as well.

CONCLUSION

​All in all, we have had Furbo for four months now and we love it! For us, it breaks the monotony of a work day and allows us to somehow interact with our beloved Kylo. It keeps him engaged throughout the day through random little bits of play and treats. The past two decades have seen some tremendous breakthroughs in communication and has made our world a smaller, more interconnected place. Furbo brings that technology to life in our interaction with our pets –both us and Kylo are certainly happy to be a part of it!

The concept is: a cube with camera, 2-way audio, and laser. ​It’s designed to connect people with their home-bound pets through a smartphone app.

Let’s find out what it’s all about.

​The Look And Feel

​It’s easy to see that how the design of the Petcube Play is based on the original Camera. And that is a good thing.

​It’s a little cube made of aluminum with a black front. The black front houses the camera and laser, the back a power connector  The cube measures 3″ x 3″ x 3″ and weighs just 2,5 ounces. ​It requires very little space on a table or shelf.

​For a clear view and good laser performance, place it between 3 and 6 feet high.

​​The bottom the Petcube Play ​has a connection for a tripod. ​We liked to use a Gorilla Pod, for secure placement in almost any location.

​Setting It Up

Setup was fast and easy, even though we are not the most “tech savy” people.​In less than 5 minutes we had it connected to our Wifi. ​After that we could adjust it to our preferences with the app.

​Video Quality

​Petcube Play has a much better camera than the earlier version. With a resolution of 1080P and strong night vision, you get a clear image of your pet and room in all conditions.The infrared LED that creates the night vision is very bright and can easily light up a ​large room in the pitch black.Animals don’t care about the infrared light, so you can spy on your cat or dog in all conditions.

​The camera is ​the best of current pet cameras, together with the Petchatz HD. But that that costs almost twice as much. ​Tip: If you are looking for a pet camera, always ​get one with night vision. ​It’s frustrating when you can’t use it anytime it’s a bit darker.

Sound Quality

​Petcube Play ​comes with a microphone and loudspeaker.

With these you can clearly hear a dog bark or yelp and a cat meow. The speaker is loud enough to ​correct a naughty pet ​and interrupt their mischief.

​Tip: ​We liked connecting headphones to our phone. It’s easier to hear when in a loud environment.

Smartphone App and interface

​​The app is a crucial part of using this device. So you want to make sure it’s easy to use, stable, and can be modified to your needs.

The Petcube was first introduced in 2014. In the beginning it certainly had some bugs. Over the years, all the user feedback has led to a stable and intuitive app.

​All the main functions (camera, screenshots, audio, laser, and alerts) are easy to control. The app never crashed and the connection is very stable.

​Petcube has a very interesting feature: Your account allows you to access public cameras. Most of these are running inside animal shelter, and you can use them to pick out a new adoption pet. Thousands of people have used this feature to follow a cat or dog before adoption. ​It’s better for the environment than driving around, plus you get to play with as many dogs or cats as you want.  The app can connect with Facebook and Youtube and let’s you make live broadcasts of your dog. Now this might not be for everyone. ​But it’s a great way to make your dog famous.

​People have already used this feature to create ​viral videos. Dog’s respond differently to the Petcube than when you are physically there. ​The result can be very funny on video.

​The current system is limited to one device per app. If you’d like to have multiple cameras set throughout your house, this is a problem. It might be added soon, as other people have been mentioning this in fora and social media. But currently, it’s not possible.

The Laser Pointer

​The laser pointer is what set the original Petcube apart, and has been copied a lot.For us, this is still our favorite feature!

​It works by just tapping the smartphone screen and moving a finger across it. We had a lot of fun with this during our commutes and work-breaks. (And also outside of the breaks:)The laser has a little bit of a lag behind the video image. It is noticeable but doesn’t interfere with the game at all. Currently, all pet cameras with laser pointer have at least some lag. There are simply too many connections between the smartphone and the device.The responsiveness of the Petcube Play is the quickest of any we have seen so far.

​Petcube’s Cloud Storage Service

​Petcube offers a cloud storage service to store the streamed video from any of their cameras.By recording all day, you can always go back and see what happened. Or play an accelerated video in the evening to check for any problems your pet might have.For $10 per month, they store ten full days of video. Then it’s always possible to look back ten days in time.Another feature that can help to keep track of things is the alerts and auto-recording. There are three modes to respond to activity near the camera:

• Record clip and send notification
• Record clip and don’t send notification
• Don’t record clips or send notification

Note: We don’t really like how Petcube positions their Cloud service. At $10 per month it’s not cheap. Yet, some features of the Petcube Play can only be used when you have the service.

Petcube Play Conclusion

​A sleek and compact pet camera ​that ​is controlled by your smartphone. The 1080P camera records ​crisp video and photos. Setup is straightforward and takes less than 5 minutes. ​Laser is fun but control takes some getting used to. Cloud service is useful but expensive.

Let me share a little story about Dee to show you how this device can help pets and owners.

 Opening the box is quite uneventful. There is only a small 4” cube inside with a cable and a quick start guide.

 Setting up Petbox is about as easy as it gets. We plugged it in, used  the app to connect to the device and entered our Wifi password. If you  would run into any problems, Petcube has a very responsive support desk.  We didn’t get to test it because we didn’t need it.

Video Quality

The  Petcube camera has 720P resolution and streams directly through your  Wifi. The camera gave us a crisp and smooth image with plenty of colors.  The only weakness is that it needs enough light. In darker conditions,  the image quality decreased. You need to keep some lights on to see  anything at night. The new Petcube Play has night vision.

Sound Quality

Being able to talk and listen to your pet requires a good speaker and  microphone. Using our headphones on our phone, we could hear our dogs  walking around. We couldn’t hear our cats, but they walk very softly. We  can’t hear them when we are in the room either. So it’s fair to say  that the sound quality is good enough to make it seem that you are  actually in the room. Without headphones, the sound level of your  surroundings play a big part in how much you can hear.

Web Interface and Smartphone App

Petcube  comes with an app for both IOS and Android. It’s immediately clear that  the engineers took great care to create an intuitive and stable app. We  never had any problems. It’s easy to start recording and take  snapshots. The images and video have great quality as long as it’s not  too dark. This is a great way to make video’s and photos of your pets  that you just can’t get when you are in the room.

Laser pointer to play

 What sets the Petcube camera apart is its laser pointer that can be  controlled through any smartphone or the website. It is designed and  tested to be safe for pets, so you don’t hurt their eyes. We had a lot  of fun with this game. Our cat is pretty crazy about laser pointers.  Controlling the movement is very straightforward and takes little time  to learn. The laser pointer reacts responsively with little to no lag.  This is essential to get your pet to chase it.

Users are pretty much all saying the same thing, it offers everything that a pet owner could want for a very reasonable price. It gets an average rating of 4.7 on Amazon. This is not an easy feat for any product, let alone one that is so new and offers so many bells whistles.

So let’s take a look

What does it do?

The main aspect of the device is that it is a pet cam.  The camera is two way so you can see your pet and your pet can see you no matter where you are.  It runs on WiFi so as long as you have internet available you can interact in real time with your precious pet. With a resolution of 720P and a good quality lens the image is extremely clear.

Who is it for?

If you are not able to keep an eye on your pet as often as you like it also has the ability to record video and store it in a Dropbox.  This way you have the ability to look back at how your pet has been doing at any time.  This is especially useful if your pet has been exhibiting behavior issues, destructive behavior or if you are simply just concerned about your pet’s general level of happiness. Pawbo does not provide the cloud storage itself. You need to sign up or use your own Dropbox account, which is free for a reasonable amount of space.

A feature that many pet owners will enjoy is direct sharing. After integrating the app with your favorite Social media account you can easily post images and videos of your pets playing. If you love watching and posting cute footage of cats or dogs then you will definitely enjoy the convenience of this feature. It is something that competing Smart Pet Toys also have and basically essential in this day and age.

Another cuteness factor is that this device has the ability to encourage play for your pet. The game on offer is chasing the laser pointer. Many cats and also dogs are very susceptible to the moving dot of light and you have probably seen the crazy moves they make.

It is however not the most long term game and gets boring pretty fast, mostly for the person operating the laser pointer. This review is already a little outdated as right now the improved version of the Pawbo is being introduced. The small startup has been “integrated” by Acer and this allows for a lot more financial backing plus solid hard- and software. This means it has now a lot more features for interacting with your pets.

Petcube offers a simple solution that is easily accessible online. A  small cube is all you need. It connects to your WiFi and can be accessed  through smartphone apps or a web page. When you are logged in, you can  see the view from the Petcube Camera in realtime. You can also hear what  is going on your house and you can speak through a small speaker. Last  but not least you get a steerable laser pointer to play with your  pet(s).

This last feature really sets the Petcube apart. Now you can play  with your pet from your office or while commuting. The system functions  in the UK without any problems. It works everywhere in the world.

Petcube let’s you see your pet from your smartphone so you can make  sure that it’s OK. But it doesn’t stop there; with two way audio and a  controllable laser, you can play with it in real time.

With the smartphone app we could give our cat a workout from the  commuter train. This is great fun when there is another delay. And we  could post the video of his crazy jumps on our Facebook or Instagram.  Other cats are fun to watch but our own is still the best.

Our friends used it to check up on their anxious dog from the office.  Even a few simple words helped to calm her down. They were worrying a  lot less during work. The dog was also a lot happier.

The software and app work to control both  the computer in the iCPooch and video display device to coordinate the  treat delivery and the video chat.

The tablet or iPhone on the pet’s end of the conversation doesn’t  need to be held in the convenient holder built into the iCPooch, it can  be placed anywhere in the home, preferably perched where its camera can  see the treats being dispensed.

The iCPooch Can Dispense Many Different Sizes Of Treats

The dispenser has an interior sleeve that can be made to handle  almost any kind of treat, both cookie-type and jerky-type as well. There  are even small plastic dishes to dispense kibble-type treats, then the  dishes will automatically stack to make room for the next treat  delivery.

Almost any round or square treat will work, there are teats you can  buy especially for the dispenser online or at many of the retailers that  handle the dispenser. It’s works like a Skype for your pet.  You place a camera with video screen on the ground and then the fun  starts. The device is controlled through a smartphone or tablet app.

Setting up the Icpooch app.

Step 1, Create Account

You can find the app in the Google Play store or Apple App store. It  downloads and install itself in a few seconds. Once you have done that  you need to open the app to get started. First you have to create an  account by filling in your name, email and creating a password. (Make  sure to choose a nice password and remember it). You need to create an  account in order to be able to access the Icpooch from anywhere.

Step 2, Connect The Device To The Internet

After you created the account you need to get the device connected to  the internet. The configuration is done through your smartphone. First  you enter the information for you WIFI (name and password) in the app.  Then the app will send it to you Icpooch device. You simply hold the  phone with the screen to the bottom of the camera and the information is  send. After doing this you might have to wait a bit for your Icpooch to  update.

Step 3, Test The Connection

If  everything went well then you are now able to get a view from the  camera through your smartphone. Now you need to test the voice  transmission and treat dispensing. This is very easy, just put in next  to your friend or family member and talk to them from a distance. You  can also dispense a few treats for them:)

Tips

If you have multiple devices connected to your Icpooch you can make  free video call between them. This option becomes available whenever you  have two or more compatible devices connected. It’s pretty cool, even  though you probably already have a free video calling functionality on  your phone or tablet.

You can use many different treats in the Icpooch, as long as they  have the correct size and are not too sticky. Of course there are the  usual dog treats that are you get from every pet store. But you can also  change it up a little to keep your pet interested. The Icpooch just  throws out the object, whatever it is. So you might be able to fit a  small squeaky toy in it.

Or put the device high on a closet and fill it with bouncing balls.  Your cat or dog won’t know what hit them. Have fun with experimenting.

Treat requirements

The Icpooch dispenses treats from a tray that can hold a multiple of treats depending on their size. Two trays are available

You can use a lot of different treats with the Icpooch. They can be  shaped like round or square cookies, or like kibbles for smaller pets.  The treats are stored in an internal sleeve inside the device. The  smaller kind of treats can be stored inside little containers that stack  in the sleeve to make sure they can dispensed correctly.

The cookies style treats can be loaded without any  extra measures on  top of each other. Any kind of cookies can be used as long as they are  relatively even shaped. You will be able to give you dog the cookies  they prefer.

Icpooch has two different sized sleeves that allow you to deliver the following sized cookies:

• Large: cookies that fit inside a circle of 1.75 to 2″ diameter. With  a thickness of approzimately .25″ you can fit around 15 cookies in the  container.
• Small: cookies that fit inside a circle of .8 to 1″ diameter.  Because the height of the container is the same you can also fit around  15 cookies in this container too.

The dish containers for smaller treats fit inside the larger of the  two sleeves. These are also stacked on top of each other. It’s possible  to fit 15 of these in the Icpooch sleeve too.

A few tips regarding Icpooch treats

You don’t want your dog to be able to raid the cookie jar.

Some dogs are very resourceful when it comes to finding their  cookies. I have seen them climb onto tables and open closet doors. It  won’t take long before your dog knows where the treats are. So if your  dog has destructive tendencies it is safest to place you Icpooch in a  location that is unreachable by your dog. You can do this by placing it  on a shelf or in an open closet. When you remove the front tray the  treats just fall to the ground.

You can make your own treats.

The  Icpooch will dispense anything that has the right size. Every pet has  their favorite treats, that make them really go wild. And just like  humans, some pets don’t like manufactured food that much. So if yours is  more into home cooking you can make your own treat. Just shape them to  fit in either of the Icpooch’s containers and make sure they are not too  sticky. Then you can dispense anything.
